WHY?

WHY RESTRING ANYWAY? Even if you’re strings AREN'T broken or too loose?

Breakdown of Strings:
Strings begin breaking down and losing their playability as soon as the racket leaves the stringing machine.
This happens even while your racket is sitting in your bag between matches.

If you go long periods without playing, it is advisable to restring your racket before taking it to the court again.

The weather & playing conditions - Wind, rain, sun, humidity, indoors, outdoors etc all affect changes in the strings.

Frequency of Play:
Major manufacturers now advise replacing strings every 40 hours of play. Professional players restring before every match and often break out a fresh racket at each ball change!
For a very good club player however, who is obviously not as sensitive as a pro, the guideline now is: if you play for 4 hours per week, a re-string every 3 months will keep your strings at a high and consistent performance level.
The average club player should change their strings 3 x per year,

Injuries:
Do you suffer from elbow, shoulder, or wrist injuries,? The condition of your strings should be the most important thing in your tennis world. If your strings lose enough life, you could be in for more than a painful loss.
We will discuss together a stringing schedule using suitable strings based on mutual experience to minimize pain and discomfort.

Your game has declined or is spasmodic:
Due to the inevitable tension loss in the strings, you could notice a different feel on the ball, resulting in less control of your shots, overcompensating of strokes, less power, increased errors, frustration etc.

WHEN?

Back in the 1980's players were advised to restring per year the same number of times they player per week. Eg: play twice per week, restring twice per year.

But over the last 20+ years, we have learned a lot about how strings work and react; New fibres, hybrid string sets, great discoveries on how tight to string rackets etc...

The understanding now for players is that no matter how advanced or expensive our strings are, they do wear out.

An unbroken string is not necessarily a good string.

The average club player should change their strings 3 x per year;
I recommend:
Oct/Nov ready for winter
Feb/Mar ready for spring
April/May ready for summer.

HOW?

We will meet with you to discuss what you want to achieve once your racket is restrung:

i) replicate what you had in it before?
ii) enhance or change your game in some way?

We will discuss string types:
Strings come in several different constructions: materials/fibres, gauges, even shapes and can be strung to varying tensions. This gives numerous combinations and possibilities that could affect your strokes and game.

Every string has its pros and cons, and we will discuss these with you to help you make the right decision.

We will ask you questions like:
Do you wish to improve on 1 of the following: feel, comfort, control, power, spin? Or on a combination?

We will discuss your playing style, the changes that you might be trying to make in your game, and any physical condition that might have contraindications towards certain string types and setups.

WHY DO STRINGS BREAK?

Miss hits / Off hits: A ball hit near the frame can cause a string to break regardless of whether it is old or new. Imagine a brand new tennis racket with perfectly installed and completely flawless new strings. Now imagine a club player or a pro — (it doesn’t matter which) tossing a ball into the air and hitting it for the very first time with this brand new racket.
Now imagine that the string breaks — because it CAN happen.

How? Typically, it is the result of a “shear break”. Shear breaks occur most often on serves or overhead smashes when a ball is hit with a high degree of force off-center near the frame. But, shear breaks can happen on groundstrokes too. Anytime you hit a ball off centre out near the frame of the racket a shear break can occur.

When a ball is hit with the centre of the string bed, the load is shared evenly by a bunch of strings. Together they are strong. But when a ball is hit off centre, the load is carried by fewer strings. And if this load it too much, one or more strings may break under the strain — even if they are new strings in a new frame installed by the world’s best stringer.

Listen to what your strings are telling you. They may be saying “Ouch!”. “Too hard.” “Time for a serve lesson.” Persistent shear breaks are more often a sign of bad technique than a sign of poor quality strings. So if the strings you are breaking are good quality strings to begin with, then you may want to listen to what they have to say.

* Heavy topspin: Constant spin wears down the strings. Players that use lots of topspin are more likely to break their strings more often because the topspin causes more movement in the strings therefore more wear and tear.
* Heavy slice: Similar to above
* Heavy hitting: The harder you hit the ball, the more beating the strings take, the shorter their life.
* Old, frayed strings: Just asking for trouble!
* Condition of racket, grommets etc: Sharp edges will cause damage

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHEN WILL I GET MY RACKET BACK?

I always aim to get it back to you asap. If you need it by a certain day, then make sure that you inform me of this. I will not make false promises.

HOW LONG WILL THE STRINGS LAST?

Your racket will be strung to a high professional standard with quality strings and therefore can last for months or even years.

However, see "When" regarding the frequency of re-stringing.

NB: If a string breaks after a short period of time, it's due to a miss-hit, overuse or other abuse (see "why do strings break?")
This is not a fault of the string or the stringer.

DO YOU COLLECT/DELIVER?

This maybe possible, depending on the circumstances. Please ask for more information.
